Labiaplasty / Vaginal Rejuvenation

Conveniently located to serve Washington DC, Arlington, Bethesda

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal corrective surgery can be performed before or after childbirth.  We can improve the aesthetics of your vaginal area and correct functional issues.  The most common procedure is labia minora reduction, however vaginal tightening after childbirth or modification of the labia majora can also be performed.  Revisions of poorly healed episiotomy incisions or vaginal tears during childbirth are also common.

Will insurance cover the procedure?

In almost all cases, this procedure is considered cosmetic by your insurance company. We can give you a quote at the time of your consultation.

How is the procedure performed?

For labia minora reduction, local anesthetic is injected.  The extra hanging skin is removed and the incision closed in layers.  Most patients are back to work in a  day or two and healing is complete by 2-4 weeks.  Sex can be reinitiated at the 4 week mark.  Risks include slow healing/wound opening, bleeding, pain.  Most of these spontaneously resolve, but in some cases, revision may be needed.

Vaginal tightening is most often done under general anesthesia.  A strip of muscosa (lining) and extra muscle is removed along the entire length of the vagina. This is closed which decreases the space inside the vagina for a tighter feel.  Sex can be resumed at the 1 month mark and most patients are back to work in 1-2 days.  This procedure can be combined with labia minora reduction.

Episiotomy incisions or spontaneous tears – sometimes these heal poorly after vaginal birth and can cause cosmetic deformity or pain. These can often be revised under local anesthetic in the office procedure room.

Risks

  1. Bleeding – some oozing is common after surgery and usually resolves spontaneously
  2. Pain – pain with intercourse is possible, however usually resolves with time
  3. Under/over correction – may require a revision
  4. Wound healing issues – due to thin tissue in this are, wound healing problems can occur
  5. Need for revision – any surgical procedure has a possibility for revision
